You may be seeing #GivingTuesday on bill boards, on friends Facebook and Twitter feeds, and on blogs around the country. What is giving Tuesday? #GivingTuesday was created in 2012 by New York’s 92nd Street Y.
“#GivingTuesday™ (#GT) is a movement to create a national day of giving to kick off the giving season added to the calendar on the Tuesday following Thanksgiving, Black Friday and Cyber Monday. The second annual GivingTuesday is on December 3, 2013. In the same way that retail stores take part in Black Friday, we want the giving community to come together for #GivingTuesday. We ask that partners create and commit to a project for/on #GivingTuesday and then help spread the word to their networks.”
So I gave today by making a donation of canned goods to my local care center. We spend our time leading up to our holiday season shopping, but many do not think about the giving portion of it to our outside community. This year, give to someone less fortunate. Give socks, a pair of glove, and a hat to someone in need. Donate a package of diapers or personal care items to your local domestic violence shelter or just offer to help a family member in need that lost their job this year. There are many ways to give. I give the only way that I know how, in canned goods and time. Time is one of the most precious commodities that we have today and people value your time when you take the time to give your time to others.
If you are too late to take part in #GivingTuesday this year, there is always next year. Just don’t forget! Just remember anyone can give no matter how small!
