“Educate a man and you educate one person; educate a woman and you educated a whole generation.” – Brigham Young
Today is International Women’s Day. As a woman this day is as important to me as Mother’s Day. It is a day when the spotlight is shined on women. The woman that you ride the elevator with every morning and exchange pleasantries with, the woman that makes your coffee, and the woman that cashes your check at the bank are all women that get up in the morning on a mission. We are nurturers, mothers, fixers, and most importantly an important cog in history. We are often looked over and treated as though we are not knowledgeable and we are still trying to crash through the glass ceiling in many areas.
“When you know better you do better.” -Maya Angelou
When I was growing up, the important thing that was a driving force in my childhood was education. When we do better, we know better and can do better, we can better educate our children, and raise them to lead the way and crash through the glass ceiling, find the cure to cancer, discover the cause of Autism, and find a way to make things better. Each generation leaves a kernel for the next and as women, we have kernels such as the Women’s Suffrage movement led by Susan B. Anthony, Jane Addams who was a charter member of the NAACP, stars like Josephine Baker, Rosa Parks who refused to give her seat on a bus and move to the back, and great writers like Tori Morrison and Maya Angelou. These women laid the ground work that we as women take advantage of now such as the right to vote and the ability to sit in a restaurant with people of all races without being asked to move because of the color of our skin. Great works of literature come from women, women walk the hall of Congress and for the first time ever, women populate the Senate.
So here is to the accomplishments of women around the world! Here is to women in developing nations that fight for education for their children, vaccinations, and the ability to make a living wage. We women are amazing creatures!! And we are will continue to be amazing and talented. So here is to International Women Day! I raise my glass to the women of the world!
